What Makes a Softshell "Technical"?
The word "softshell" gets thrown around a lot. You'll see it on €40 high-street jackets and €600 alpine pieces alike. The difference is almost entirely in the fabric construction.
A true technical softshell does three things simultaneously: it resists wind and light rain on the outside, it moves with your body, and it provides warmth without bulk. Most fabrics compromise on at least one of these. The cheap ones compromise on all three.

The Construction: Three Problems, One Fabric
11261 Plain-Weave Nylon with PFC-Free DWR
A tight plain-weave nylon — the same weave structure used in high-performance outerwear for decades because it works. Dense enough to block wind, structured enough to resist abrasion, and treated with a PFC-free DWR finish that beads water on contact. PFC-free matters: the industry has been moving away from perfluorocarbon-based treatments for years due to their environmental persistence. You get weather resistance with a clean conscience.
Lightweight Bonded Technical Fleece
Bonded directly to the face is a lightweight technical fleece — not thick or heavy, but engineered for warmth-to-weight ratio. Soft against the skin, breathable, and just warm enough to make this a genuine standalone layer. The bonding process is critical: when done properly, face and backer move as one — no shifting, no bunching, no delamination over time.
True 4-Way Stretch
230 gsm with genuine multi-directional stretch. The elastane (7%) and polyurethane (6%) give excellent recovery — meaning it moves with you and springs back. No bagging at the elbows. No restriction when you reach overhead. At 147 cm cuttable width, pattern efficiency is excellent for full garment construction.

What We Made With It
We chose this fabric for our technical coat because it solved a problem we kept running into — most coat-weight fabrics are either too stiff, too heavy, or too fragile for genuine outdoor use.
At 230 gsm it's substantial enough for a structured coat silhouette while remaining light enough to move naturally. The 4-way stretch means the coat works whether you're reaching for a door handle or hiking a ridgeline. The DWR face handles the inevitable caught-in-the-rain moments without a second thought.
The flash of orange visible in the hood is intentional — a moment of colour revealed only when the hood is up or the collar open. It's a detail borrowed from the logic of performance outerwear, reinterpreted here as a design signature. Technical enough for real weather. Clean enough for the city.
For Sewists & Makers
- Cuts cleanly with minimal fraying — a genuine advantage with bonded fabrics, which can sometimes separate at edges.
- Use Microtex or stretch needles for best results through the bonded construction.
- Seam taping is possible for fully weather-resistant builds — a feature usually reserved for hard-shell construction.
- Excellent recovery after sewing — the elastane/PU combination means minimal tension adjustment compared to single-layer stretch fabrics.
- Suitable for jackets, softshell hoodies, hiking pants, uniforms, running layers, and children's outerwear.
