Most performance fabrics made for hot weather are designed around one simple idea: move sweat away from the skin as quickly as possible, dry fast, and keep the wearer feeling dry.

Polartec® Delta™ OR takes a different approach.

Instead of drying instantly, Delta™ OR is engineered to disperse moisture slowly and evenly across the fabric surface. This allows a thin layer of moisture to remain available for evaporation — the same natural cooling mechanism your body already uses when you sweat.

Evaporation pulls heat away from the skin. If a fabric dries too aggressively, that cooling reaction can be reduced. Delta™ OR is built to support that reaction, not interrupt it.

That is why this fabric may feel slightly damp during activity. It is not a defect. It is the cooling system working as intended.

The Role of Tencel™ Lyocell

The Tencel™ Lyocell content is one of the key reasons this fabric performs differently from a standard polyester mesh.

Lyocell fibers are smooth, comfortable, and naturally more moisture-absorbent than standard polyester. In Delta™ OR, this helps the fabric hold and distribute moisture evenly across the surface, supporting the slow-evaporation cooling mechanism.

Where It Does Not Belong

It is also not designed to feel completely dry during hard activity. If your goal is a fast-drying fabric that feels dry almost immediately, Delta™ OR may not be the right choice.

Its value comes from staying slightly damp long enough for evaporative cooling to take place. That makes sense in hot weather and during active use — not as a cold-weather insulation layer.

Why “Slightly Damp” Is a Feature

Many people are used to judging technical fabrics by how quickly they dry. But in very hot conditions, the fastest-drying fabric is not always the best cooling fabric.

Delta™ OR is designed to keep moisture available for evaporation while maintaining airflow and comfort. The fabric should not feel heavy or soaked like cotton, but it also should not behave like a dry synthetic tee.

That controlled moisture retention is exactly what makes it interesting.

An Interesting Crossover: Could It Help Cool a Horse?

A recent customer asked whether a fabric like Delta™ OR could be used for horse cooling blankets or cooling layers.

The question makes sense.

The basic cooling principle is the same: moisture spreads across a surface, air passes through or over the material, and evaporation pulls heat away from the body.

Horses generate a large amount of body heat during work, and the equestrian world already uses cooling sheets and mesh cooler rugs based on similar evaporative principles.

However, the challenge is not the cooling mechanism — it is the construction.

Delta™ OR is a lightweight apparel fabric. A horse cooling rug needs to withstand tension, movement, rolling, biting, repeated washing, reinforced edges, straps, and much larger surface stress than a human T-shirt.

So while Delta™ OR could be interesting for experimental cooling layers, lightweight inserts, or reinforced custom projects, it should not be treated as a direct replacement for a purpose-built equine cooling rug unless the final product is properly designed and reinforced.

Polartec® Delta™ OR is sold by the full meter and cut from authentic deadstock rolls.

Each unit equals one full meter. If you order multiple meters, the fabric is supplied as one continuous piece whenever possible.

For example, if you order 2 units, you receive 2 meters in one continuous length, not two separate 1-meter cuts.
